Businesses both small and large make the fatal error of not valuing employee engagement or team morale. Nor do bosses fully understand the importance it plays in building the company brand.
There are a number of different factors that influence team morale, but here are five key elements that I believe are essential to build a winning team within your small business:
1. The company vision
Having a clear defined company vision binds employees to a shared goal. It allows them to be part of something that is bigger than themselves. It offers a sense of belonging and gives reason for their contribution.
A large portion of growth and success of the most influential companies has to be attributed to powerful and inspiring visions. Microsoft, Apple and Instagram are but a few of the companies that have changed the world as we know it exactly because of empowering visions.
2. Employee engagement plans
It’s easy to underappreciate the significance of working in a fun environment. But creating a happy working atmosphere not only raises employee morale, but also reduces absences and increases productivity by up to 17%. These are crucial factors within a small business.
One example of this is the film Pelé: Birth of a Legend, which follows the journey of the Brazil world cup team up through to the 1958 world cup final. It highlights how excellence can be achieved when a team is in total harmony and more importantly having fun during the process.
3. Celebrate your wins
Recognising and rewarding your employee’s achievements raises team spirits and paves the way for future success. Irrespective of job role, all team members should be included within this process so that everyone’s achievements can be recognised.
Whether it be a celebratory meal or just dedicating a set time for everyone to get together to reflect on their wins of the week, coming together as a team and recognising your achievements will unify the team and strengthen bonds.
4. Promote from within
Research shows that companies promoting from within experience higher productivity and greater moral amongst team members. It’s important to get the right people on board, and being able to demonstrate future career growth allows you to retain those people who otherwise may have sought opportunity elsewhere.
Plus, when hiring from within your employees already understand the company culture and the expectations set upon them.
5. Reward loyalty
The vast majority of employers value long-serving staff members, yet many forget to tell them so. Longstanding employees are usually the consistent performers, those who deliver week in week out for many years. It’s this type of employee who can sometimes be overlooked despite playing such an important role within your business.
Initiatives, like a yearly increase of annual leave allowance, help to reward such loyal employees and maintain morale, plus it offers a great incentive to others.
